Science: “A passion for pathways: Careers in diversity and inclusion for STEM postdocs”

This article in Nature explains how a doctorate in STEM prepares individuals for a career as a diversity and inclusion (D&I) professional within academia.

The article details the experiences of various underrepresented minorities (URMs) – the challenges they faced as doctoral students and the careers in diversity and inclusion that they built to ensure other scientists would have adequate support systems. The scientists interviewed focus especially on the parallels between their doctoral research and their current work in D&I.

BGS Professional Skills Series: “Inclusion & Diversity”

BGS students are invited to attend, “Inclusion and Diversity: Perspectives from Business,” the next installment in the BGS Professional Skills Series. The workshop will take place February 27, 2019 from 4 – 5:30 PM in Smilow 12-146AB. It is co-hosted by SACNAS and EE Just.

Light refreshments will be served.

Dr. Laura Roberts, Teaching Professor of Management (McDonough School of Business, Georgetown University) will present an interactive lecture that includes illustrative cases and large group discussion. Dr. Roberts will tackle the question, “How can leaders facilitate generative dialogue that harnesses the power of inquiry, encourages learning from diverse experiences and fuels positive organizing?” Specific strategies for building an asset-based (potential-focused) perspective and an action plan for inclusive leadership will be addressed.

Key topics of discussion will include:

  • How diversity and inclusion factor into strategic decisions
  • Best practices and common pitfalls at leading inclusive businesses
  • Identity-based resourcing perspectives

Exploring Pharmacology with Upward Bound:”Introduction to Cancer: The Hijacked Cell Cycle”

Pharm4GOOD has partnered with Upward Bound at Penn to teach a pharmacology-themed curriculum as part of their “College Prep Saturday” program. Upward Bound is a national organization that provides educational resources and support for low income students.

You will have the opportunity to work with small groups of high school students as they learn about the cell cycle and discover how cancer is the loss cell cycle regulation. Students will learn how to use microscopes and examine stained slides to assess cancer cell morphology.

“SfN: A Look at One Neuroscientist’s Career in Pharma and Biotech”

The Society for Neuroscience published a two-part interview with Khan Ozol, a neuroscientist and global head of talent scouting at Novartis. In part one of the interview, Ozol shares the career path that led him to his current position. He focuses specifically on the influences that helped him realize his passion for entrepreneurship, with a focus on science.

In part two, he describes the types of positions available in industry and some of the typical career trajectories. Though Ozol frequently mentions neuroscientists, his insights on how to be a competitive candidate in industry are widely applicable.

Clarion Consultancy: PROPEL 2019

Clarion, a Boston-based life sciences strategy consulting firm, will hold its 2019 leadership training program for current advanced degree candidates on Wednesday, June 12th – Friday, June 14th, 2019.

PROPEL is a 3-day summer program to give an insight into life science strategy consulting with Clarion.

It is open to the following candidates:

  • PhD candidates (completing program in Spring 2020)
  • Post-doctoral researchers
  • MD candidates (completing program in Spring 2020)
  • MD residents and fellows

Candidates must have expertise in disciplines related to life sciences, medicine, or other areas of quantitative research. To apply for the program and for more information, please see the attached flyer or visit the PROPEL website.
