McNeill Baur PLLC seeking Technical Specialist

TECHNICAL SPECIALIST

McNeill Baur PLLC (www.mcneillbaur.com) are seeking a Technology Specialist with superior verbal and written skills and a PhD in Biology or Biochemistry from a superior institution. The Technical Specialist will provide scientific support to patent attorneys working on patent prosecution and counseling projects. Prior experience with patent law is not required as the position offers substantive training and career advancement opportunities in patent law.

Responsibilities include:

  • advising attorneys based on technical or scientific area of expertise,
  • drafting patent applications, including examples, descriptions of figures, claims, and detailed descriptions of inventions,
  • preparing draft responses to office actions and other prosecution filings,
  • performing technical analysis of commercial products, scientific literature, and patent documents for freedom-to-operate, invalidity, and noninfringement opinions, and
  • performing research to support review of technology and patent portfolios that clients may acquire or license.

Technical specialists at McNeill Baur are given the opportunity for significant responsibility early in their career, which provides meaningful career development towards a career as a patent agent. Technical specialists and patent agents typically work one-on-one with associates, counsel, and partners while gaining experience in a broad range of patent strategy, drafting, prosecution, and diligence matters.

A successful candidate will be expected to take and pass the USPTO registration exam within a year of being hired. The firm will pay for a USPTO registration exam review course to supplement on the job training with the firm’s attorneys on client matters.

We will consider candidates for both part-time and full-time positions, residing in the city of your choice. We also welcome on-ramp candidates who want to return to the workforce. The firm offers health insurance, dental insurance, disability insurance, life insurance, EAP program, a competitive salary, and a 401K plan with generous matching component.

Patent Law Panel

BGS students interested in a career in patent law are invited to attend a panel session hosting 3 BGS alumni who currently work in patent law on May 30th, 2019, 12-1:30 PM in BRB 252. This event is organized by GLIA. Come and learn about the intricacies of a career in patent law, find out how you can explore if a career in patent law is for you, and how you can start preparing to pursue a career in this field. The 30 minute panel will feature:

  • Robert C. Netter
    • CAMB alum who graduated in 2002
    • Currently works as a patent attorney at Dann Dorfman Herrell & Skillman P.C.
  • Laura Gordon
    • NGG alum who graduated in 2011
    • Currently works as an associate attorney at Baker & Hostetler LLP
  • Daniel Scolnick 
    • BMB alum who graduated in 2000
    • Currently works as a Partner in the Health Sciences Department at Pepper Hamilton LLP.

The panel will be followed by a presentation by Tomás Isakowitz (Program Director at Penn’s Center for Innovation) and then open the floor for Q&A to all of the speakers.

Certificate in Law Information Session

You are invited to attend a Certificate in Law information session for BGS students on January 10, 2019, 12-1 PM, in Blockley Hall Seminar Room 1311. The certificate provides an introduction to law and legal principles and is structured to provide a flexibility adaptable to different pursuits. It may be especially attractive to those interested in entrepreneurship, patent law, regulatory affairs, and certain pharmaceutical settings. The session will discuss the various options in taking one or more classes.

Lunch will be provided! 

As a reminder, students who wish to pursue a certificate program must obtain permission from their graduate groups and BGS as described here.
