Wellness and Setting our intentions for 2021
January 11, 2021 from 1:00 – 3:15 PM EST

Register here: https://www.training.nih.gov/sas/_20/1994/
The OITE will hold our monthly webinar and small group discussion promoting mental health and well-being for scientists. The topic this month is Wellness and Setting our intentions for 2021. We will provide a broad definition of wellness, discuss strategies for dealing with obstacles that get in our way and explore a bit about mindfulness. Wellness is so much more than the absence of disease and to do our best work, we really do need to develop our wellness and resilience practices. The culture of science is slowly changing to acknowledge, and even embrace, concepts of stress management, resilience and wellness. This webinar is open to NIHers and folks outside the NIH, including students, fellows, staff and faculty. Coming in February – dealing with anxiety and perfectionism; for info about up-coming webinars visit https://www.training.nih.gov/new_seminar_series_mental_health_and_well-being#Schedule

Becoming a Resilient Scientist: Setting Reasonable Expectations and Healthy Boundaries for Ourselves and with Our Supervisors
https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/2300107262959484429

Apr 01, 2020 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Speaker(s): Sharon Milgram, PhD, Director, OITE

Being a scientist requires a tremendous amount of resilience – experiments fail, papers get rejected, we struggle to communicate effectively with our supervisors and peers, and establishing healthy work-life boundaries can be a challenge, even in good times. These challenges are amplified greatly during this current crisis where we are bombarded by stressful news and have to make major adjustments to the ways we can and cannot do work. Join Dr. Sharon Milgram, Director NIH OITE, for a workshop focused broadly on resilience in research environments with a special focus on topics that are an especially challenging now. Topics to be addressed include, setting expectations and responding to the expectations of others, staying focused when teleworking, dealing with career-related anxieties, and strategies for building our resilience for now and in the long-term.

ENVISION-YOU – PSBR is partnering with ENVISION YOU – a community youth initiative by the Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church in Philadelphia. ENVISION YOU is an annual program designed to introduce students to professions, trades and other vocational opportunities that are open to them after high school. The goal is foster student awareness of professional options to which they may not otherwise be exposed. PSBR has been invited to offer K-12 students an engaging workshop focused on biomedical research. On average the program has about 120 total students (K-12) and the selected professional topic is presented to the students through age appropriate activities and discussions. We request volunteer support to run a PSBR-provided activity or to participate in a student-focused discussion.

This opportunity is coming up quickly, so if you are interested, please let me know as soon as you are able so we may include you in the planning stages of the event. Contact david@psbr.org

When: 3/28/20
Duration: 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM
Where: Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church
What we need: We need the support of our volunteers to provide assistance for the following tasks: 1) Run a biomedical science activity with the students, 2) Act as a workshop mentor, guiding students with their tasks and answering questions, and/or 3) Be part of a career exploration panel.

Philadelphia Science Festival – PSBR is once again running a variety of events at the Philadelphia Science Festival in April, 2020. And we could really use your support to make these programs a smashing success. Additional event information, including dates and locations, can be found below. Please consider joining us at one of these events to help PSBR engage our communities and youth. CLICK HERE to sign up for any of these events.

  • PSF Adult Kick-off Party (Franklin Institute, Thursday, April 16, 7-10 PM)
