SfN: “How This Postdoc Found a Position Right for Her”

The Society for Neuroscience interviewed Elizabeth Glover, a postdoctoral fellow at the Medical University of South Carolina. In this article, Glover reflects on her search for a postdoc position and shares the qualities she sought in mentors, such as expertise in certain methodological approaches or success in obtaining grants. She also speaks to the importance of lab culture, networking, and female mentors in her career development path.

2019 Competition for the iBiology Young Scientist Seminars (YSS)

The Young Scientist Seminars (YSS) is a video series produced by iBiology that features early-career scientists giving talks about their research and discoveries. As with all iBiology videos, the YSS videos are freely available online and widely viewed by an international audience of students, scientists, educators, and the public. Speakers in the YSS series must apply by December 17, 2018 (11:59pm PT) to be selected.

Benefits

  • Winners will receive an all-expenses paid trip to the University of California, San Francisco (late Spring 2019, exact date TBD), where they will attend a multi-day science communication workshop led by the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science, in collaboration with iBiology. During the workshop, they will make improvements to their 30-minute research talks.
  • At the end of the workshop week, winners will record their improved 30-minute research talks in iBiology’s green screen studio. Studio-recorded talks will be posted on the iBiology website as part of a the Young Scientist Seminars.
  • Receive a $500 honorarium.

This is a unique opportunity for young scientists to develop their communication skills and showcase their work! (Via iBiology.)

BPS: “How to Prepare for an Academic Job Interview”

Those interested in a career in academia may find some helpful insights in this career article from the Biophysical Society. The author summarizes the various processes involved in an academic job interview. These may include a phone or Skype call, individual meetings, a research talk, a chalk-talk, or teaching a course. The author also lists characteristics of the academic institution that the interview candidate should assess, from resources available to programs promoting work-life balance.

ASCB: “COMPASS Career Perspectives”

The American Society for Cell Biology’s Committee for Postdocs and Students (COMPASS) has compiled a list of career perspectives. These profiles are an excellent resource for students considering different industry careers; they provide detailed information on the various professionals’ current positions, their academic and research backgrounds, how they conducted their job search, and many other important topics. Featured interviewees encompass diverse positions, from audit assistant to bioinformaticist.

Interviewing for Faculty Jobs – STEM

This Career Services program is open to doctoral students and postdocs as part of the Academic Job Search Series. The panel presentation will provide insight into navigating a campus visit, a crucial component of the faculty interviewing process. Candidates, whether applying for a visiting assistant professor position or a tenure track faculty position, should be prepared with questions, negotiation points, and an understanding of what the search committee is looking for.

Take this opportunity to learn about campus interviews from faculty members who have been through the process as candidates and members of search committees.

BioSciences Career Fair 2018
