PennIRM Socially Distanced Seminars: Preprints in Conversation

July 15, 2020 by Rebecca Lopez

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance and impact of preprint servers like never before. But are these tools right for you? What do preprints mean for exposure? Trainees? Research quality?

Join us on Tuesday, July 21, 2020 at 1 PM EDT for a seminar with our own Joel Boerckel, Ph.D.: “Preprints in Conversation: An Argument for Preprint Adoption by Researchers in the IRM.” Joel will be discussing his personal experience with preprints and sharing why he thinks this tool is ripe for widespread use. Come learn more about this science communication strategy and discuss the state of preprints in 2020, whether you have used them or not.

Science Corps Fellowship

July 13, 2020 by Rebecca Lopez

Science Corps Logo

Are you a recent or soon-to-be PhD graduate? Would you like to spend up to six months making a difference by developing and teaching science curriculum abroad?

Science Corps offers fully paid internships to upcoming and recent PhD graduates (up to four years after graduation) to help build science capacity at one of our two host locations – a small city on the island of Bohol in the Philippines and a village up in the Indian Himalayas. We are also currently developing new sites in partnership with Pueblo Science.

Fellows travel to partner institutions to develop science curriculum, teach in secondary school classrooms, train teachers, and build community-based research projects. In addition to building science capacity at these host locations, we also aim to offer fellows a life-changing experience. They are given the opportunity to spend time in beautiful locations, immerse themselves in different cultures, and learn from their host educators, all while making positive contributions to these communities.

We are presently interested in recruiting immediately for fellowships starting within the next year. The deadline for this application round is July 31st, but we still encourage you to contact us if you would like to be considered for a later appointment. To find out more about us and apply, please go to https://science-corps.org.

New Video Platform: JRNLclub

July 9, 2020 by Rebecca Lopez

JRNLclub, the online journal club

JRNLclub is a new video platform allowing scientists to watch videos on new scientific literature. Critical to the success of scientific discovery is the ability for researchers to understand and build upon new discoveries, but with nearly 1 million new biomedical publications annually, this is often a difficult endeavor.  By publishing short engaging talks by authors of recent research articles, they facilitate the dissemination of science and help researchers stay up to date on the scientific literature. They have published well over 100 videos from renowned labs around the world (including from the Brian Capell, Virginia Lee, Celeste Simon, Katalin Susztak, and Greg Beatty labs at Penn) and were recently approved by US National Library of Medicine to put our resource on PubMed such that articles with a corresponding video on JRNLclub will have a direct link to the video. Website: www.JRNLclub.org

Also note that JRNclub is actively recruiting video submissions for upcoming publications or those published in the last year. For more information, contact Victoria.Fang@Pennmedicine.upenn.edu.
