PSPDG: Scientific Writing Workshop

January 6, 2020 by Rebecca Lopez

“If an experiment is done in the lab but no journal ever publishes it, did it really happen? Writing scientific articles and grants is critical for communicating our work to other scientists and advancing our fields, but scientific writing is often indecipherable, even to other scientists. Join Dr. Judith Swan, Assoc. Dir. for Writing in Science and Engineering at Princeton and renowned scientific writing expert, as she teaches students to clarify their writing, anticipate the expectations of readers, and make persuasive arguments.

This workshop will be held in two back-to-back parts. Part 1 (10am-12pm) will focus on “Clarifying Cause and Effect in Writing,” and Part 2 (12:30-2:30pm) will focus on “The Art of Persuasion”.

Students can attend Part 1, Part 2, or both, as parts 1 and 2 will be related but distinct. There will be interactive group exercises to encourage retention, as well as an optional take-home assignment . Food will be served! Registration will open on Jan 6, 2020.”

BGS Improv Workshop Series – October 2019

September 17, 2019 by Rebecca Lopez

Interested in improving your science communication skills? Wish you had the confidence to ask questions in a crowded seminar or conference? Want to become a better networker?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you should sign up for the upcoming FREE BGS Improv Workshop this October and November!

Improv is not stand-up comedy; it is acting without a script. It is about thinking on your feet, problem solving, being authentic, encouraging effective communication, projecting confidence, facilitating teamwork, and not being worried about making mistakes. Gain transferable skills needed in the lab and for communicating science to colleagues and to the general public.

This 6-week workshop, led by professional instructor Sharon Geller, will provide a fun and supportive learning environment for exploring improv techniques and improving communication skills.

Join us:

Mondays, October 7th – November 11th from 5:30-7:30PM
Room 425 Van Pelt-Dietrich Library Center
Instructor: Sharon Geller (Improv instructor at the Walnut Street Theater)
