Exploring Pharmacology with High School Students: “Your Body on Sugar: Diabetes Explained”

Sat, Jan 26th 12-1PM in Meyerson Hall

Pharm4GOOD has partnered with Upward Bound at UPenn to teach a pharmacology-themed curriculum as part of their “College Prep Saturday” program. Graduate student volunteers will work with small groups of students during a hands-on activity. Students will measure the amount of sugar in soda, apple juice and fresh apples and learn how the body converts sucrose into glucose. The activity will be complemented with a lecture that will de-mystify how and why people living with diabetes metabolize sugar differently and how diet can play a role in their overall health.

CPHI Seminar Series 2018-2019

January 8, 2019 by Rebecca Lopez

As part of the 2018-2019 CPHI Seminar Series, Dr. Paul Offit, Director of the Vaccine Education Center at CHOP will present, “How to Communicate Science to the Public or Die Trying.”

Description

“We live in a society where scientific illiteracy has devolved to scientific denialism. People simply declare their own truths: vaccines cause autism, climate change is a hoax, or creationism and evolution are equally valid hypotheses. As a consequence, science is losing its place as a source of truth. Now, more than ever before, it is important for scientists, clinicians, academics, and public health officials to stand up for science. We will discuss the challenges to communicating science to the media and to the public.” – Dr. Offit

When: Thu, Jan. 17, 2019, 12:00 PM – 1:30 PM

Where: Houston Hall Bodek Lounge

Lunch provided

IHE: “Powering Up Your Résumé for a Nonfaculty Job Search”

December 21, 2018 by Rebecca Lopez

This Inside Higher Ed article details the importance of writing a nonacademic resume from scratch, rather than converting an academic CV into a resume. While the reviewer of an academic CV would understand the intricacies of a scientific discipline and eagerly read all relevant accomplishments, a hiring manager in industry will generally be interested in broad-picture competencies and skills. The author explains how to extract these wider competencies from specific academic accomplishments (as well as from volunteer or work experiences) and communicate them in the form of a resume.

Science: “A social media survival guide for scientists”

December 18, 2018 by Rebecca Lopez

This Science article, posted under “Letters to Young Scientists,” describes the merits of maintaining a social media presence. Even without posting original content, becoming an active member of online communities creates a curated list of discoveries, events, and discussions. The authors also describe the potential outreach benefits, stating:

“Having a presence on social media may even lead to opportunities,  exposure, and impact beyond scientific circles. A recent study suggests that scientists with more than approximately 1000 Twitter followers reach a broad audience, including educational organizations, media, and members of the general public—people who are unlikely to dust off an academic journal to read your research.”
