SfN: “How This Postdoc Found a Position Right for Her”

The Society for Neuroscience interviewed Elizabeth Glover, a postdoctoral fellow at the Medical University of South Carolina. In this article, Glover reflects on her search for a postdoc position and shares the qualities she sought in mentors, such as expertise in certain methodological approaches or success in obtaining grants. She also speaks to the importance of lab culture, networking, and female mentors in her career development path.

BioSciences Career Fair 2018

The BioSciences Career Fair will be on October 25th, 2018, with over 60 employers coming to chat with STEM graduate students and postdocs. Employers include J&J, Pfizer, GSK, Bristol-Myers Squibb, CSL Behring, Celgene, Regeneron, and many more!

Prepare for the BioSciences Career Fair

In anticipation of the BioSciences Career Fair (October 25, 2018), the Biomedical Postdoctoral Council and Penn Career Services will host a preparatory workshop. They will cover essential information on:

• Why career fairs can be helpful to you no-matter where you are in your PhD program or postdoc appointment

• Putting together a career fair ready resume if you are on the job market

• Preparing your introduction for when you chat with employers

• Using Handshake and Career Fair Plus to gather information on employers

• Making a list of relevant questions you can ask

• Networking when you are not looking for a job

• What you can do after the fair to help your continued career exploration or applications (Via Handshake).

When: Thursday, October 18th 2018, 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm

Students exploring careers in different industries might be especially interested in their guideline to informational interviews. This document provides a definition of informational interviews, tips on how to request such a meeting, and a sample of general informational questions to ask.

Biophysical Society: “Using Social Media to Share your Science”
