PennGGHE and Genetics Symposium on February 24 and 25, 2021

On behalf of Drs. Daniel Rader and Sarah Tishkoff, the Center for Global Genomics & Health Equity and the Department of Genetics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine are jointly hosting a virtual symposium entitled, “Importance and Challenges of Increasing Ethnic Diversity in Human Genomics Research”. 

The two-day virtual symposium includes invited speakers of diverse backgrounds discussing their research and experiences in increasing diversity in human genomics and the ethical issues to be considered.  The symposium will be held on Wednesday, February 24 and Thursday, February 25, 2021 from 12:00PM to 4:00PM(EST). The topics of discussion for the two-day virtual symposium are:

Day 1: “Importance and Value of Increasing Ethnic Diversity in Human Genomics Research”

Day 2: “Challenges with Conducting Genomic Studies in Minority Populations”

The symposium is free and faculty, postdocs, students, and staff are all welcome to attend.

Black Queer Town Hall in STEM

The Black Queer Town Hall in STEM will feature Black Queer scientists from around the world for a day of panels hosted by Trans actor/entertainer and activist Miss Peppermint from RuPaul’s Drag Race, with appearances by Bob the Drag Queen from RuPaul’s Drag Race.

The next three days of the Town Hall will feature seminars presented by Black Queer scientists from around the world with topics ranging from physics, biology, biochemistry, chemistry, bioengineering, epidemiology, and sociology.

Discover the best way to request something for pick up at Van Pelt Library, or have it mailed directly to your door, or to receive a PDF scan of an article or book chapter. Library 101 will make it easy and has the answers for you.

Even if you only have 5 minutes, feel free to pop in with all your questions about Pickup@Penn, Books by Mail, Request Digital Delivery and getting things from other libraries via Borrow Direct, E-ZBorrow and Interlibrary Loan. Find out “How to Library”!

Advancing Graduate Studies (AGS) in Cancer Research

Patel Scholar Award*

Purpose: To provide additional resources to graduate students involved in cancer research.

  • $5,000 per year for supplies and research services (two years)
  • $500 per year for meeting registration and travel (use each year)

Eligibility: Cancer Biology Group graduate students with impact scores on NIH F30/F31 proposals in 2019 or 2020, and BGS graduate students with impact scores on NCI F30/31 proposals during this time frame, are eligible.

Criteria: Awards are based on the impact score given by the study section, and relevance to cancer research in the case of tie scores. 

To Apply: Email Eric Brown (brownej@upenn.edu) and Margaret Chou (mmc@pennmedicine.upenn.edu) copies of the NIH Summary Statement face page, with the impact score shown.  Please write “Patel Scholar Award” in the subject line of your email so your award is not missed or filtered.  Due date for the application is Friday, December 18, 2020.

If you are planning to apply for an F30/31 this year, templates for Research Strategy, Training Plan, Sponsor Letter and other documents are available through the BGS and CAMB programs. Please contact your graduate group chair for additional information.
