Opportunity for senior graduate students or recent postdocs –
OSU Postdoc Recruiting Event:
Applications are now being accepted for the Ohio State University 2019 Fall Postdoctoral Recruitment Event, being held October 23-25, 2019. This event will provide an excellent opportunity for outstanding postdocs and PhD students from leading graduate programs to meet research faculty, interview for open postdoctoral positions and discover the exciting and innovative research taking place at The Ohio State University and the Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital (NCH). Selected candidates will visit the Ohio State campus, network with current OSU and NCH postdocs, present their research, interview with prospective mentors, and learn more about postdoctoral opportunities at Ohio State. Full funding will be provided for travel expenses and candidates may be considered for a variety of opportunities, including fellowships, training grants, and other internal training programs.
Application for this event is open until September 9th and is available to postdocs or senior graduate students who have completed or expect to complete their PhD between December 2018 and May 2020. Any candidates in the US (visa status does not matter) can apply and we are especially interested in reviewing applications from US Citizens and permanent residents who are training grant-eligible and/or who come from underrepresented backgrounds including African Americans, Hispanics or Latinos, American Indians or Alaskan Natives, Native Hawaiians or other Pacific Islanders, or persons with a disability.
More information can be found on the web page or the application can be accessed directly through the link below.

Dr. Shai Silberberg (NINDS), ‘Assuring a bright future for biomedical research’
Dr. Shai Silberberg, Program Director and Director of Research Quality at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) will be visiting Penn on Wednesday, June 5, 2019. Dr. Silberberg in his role with NINDS has an especially sophisticated understanding of what drives the emphasis by NIH on rigor and transparency. His institute, as well, has been particularly aggressive in experimenting with solutions through pre- and postdoctoral training venues. Dr. Silberberg’s talk, ‘Assuring a bright future for biomedical research’, will take place 10–11:30am in the Austrian Auditorium.
We have worked at Penn on issues of rigor and transparency for some time. Dr. Silberberg’s talk will reinforce much of what we do, but it will also provide specific insight into emerging thoughts and expectations of NIH. Those interested in familiarizing themselves with Dr. Silberberg’s work prior to the talk may read his important publication on reporting scientific outcomes (Landis et al., Nature 490 (2012) 187).
iBiology, “Let’s Experiment” is now available self-paced
“Let’s Experiment” is now available self-paced, anytime!
“Let’s Experiment: A Guide for Scientists Working at the Bench” is a free online course from iBiology that is now available self-paced, anytime. In the course,
- Hear inspiring speakers share new perspectives about important, but sometimes lost, aspects of experimental design.
- Learn how biological research really happens from real-world examples, and gain tips on how to navigate it.
- Apply what you’re learning to your own research, and walk away with a solid plan for how to start and carry out your own experiments.

Read what students are saying about “Let’s Experiment:”
“I feel more secure in my ability to assess how much effort and time experiments need…I really appreciate a systematic way of preparing and thinking about experiments and their results.”
“I found the videos, where different extraordinary scientists tell their own story, truly inspiring and very encouraging.”
“I really like that this course took the lessons that people learn through experience and directly taught the concepts in a way that is easy to apply to everyday life in the lab.”

ASCB: How to ignore good advice and postdoc in a newly opened lab
The American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB) features one scientist’s reflections on the process of searching for a postdoc position as he neared the end of his PhD. The author ultimately decided to join a newly opened lab despite initial misgivings, and he shares honest insights on what he sacrificed and gained in the process (i.e. loss of built-in networks versus gaining an immediate impact on the lab’s research and culture.)

Symposium in Honor of P. Leslie Dutton
One of the PSOM’s most distinguished faculty members, P. Leslie Dutton, FRS, Eldridge Reeves Johnson Professor of Biophysics and Biochemistry, is retiring. Leslie is a former chair of the B&B department, and a former chair of the Biophysics Graduate Group (before BC and BP merged). There will be a scientific symposium in his honor, Friday, May 31st – Saturday, June 1st.
More than 25 PhD students graduated from Leslie’s lab, from 1978 onwards, and almost ALL of them will be at the symposium! About 10 of them will be speaking. These alumni have gone on to successful careers in academia, industry, gov. research. consulting etc., so this would be a unique opportunity for BGS students to see and meet them. The symposium is open to everyone, and there are also two breakfasts which would provide opportunities for students to meet and talk informally with these alumni.
