FitzGerald Lab Opportunities – Graduate Students & Postdocs

February 19, 2021 by Rebecca Lopez

The FitzGerald lab has opportunities in its two areas of interest – bioactive lipids and the molecular clock.

In the first, current projects are focused on defining the role of eicosanoids and other bioactive lipids in cardiopulmonary disease, pain, the response to checkpoint blockade in cancer, aging and in viral infections, such as in COVID-19.

Our work on molecular clocks includes the integration of multi-omics and remote sensing data to define the human chronobiome in aging and in time dependent disease phenotypes such as non-dipping hypertension and asthma. We are also interested in the mechanisms which underlie sexual dimorphism in chronobiology and in using mass spec imaging and single cell biology to study circadian phenotypes in mice.

Overall, we are a group of around 30 from varied backgrounds including clinical medicine, informatics, mass spectrometry, genetics, metabolism, molecular and cell biology. A driving feature of our research is to integrate studies in model systems – mice, zebrafish, organoids, iPSC cells – with the deep and perturbed phenotyping possible in experimental medicine at the Center for Human Phenomic Science and the capacity to address hypotheses at scale using resources such as the Penn Medicine and UK Biobanks.

Please contact Garret FitzGerald (garret@upenn.edu).

Deadline: March 15, 2021

Penn 3MT is a university-sponsored competitive speaking competition designed to showcase graduate student research in three-minute talks to a general audience. This is a terrific opportunity for graduate students engaged in substantive original research to develop communication skills and share their work with faculty, students, and staff from across the University.

In addition to bragging rights, prizes will be awarded to the top three winners and an audience choice winner. To enter, students must submit a video of their three-minute talk to Penn 3MT. From those submissions, finalists will be chosen to compete in the campus wide online competition.

Penn Society for Psychedelic Science Seminar Series

February 17, 2021 by Rebecca Lopez

This semester, the Penn Society for Psychedelic Science is hosting a seminar series showcasing the broad range of research – from molecules, to brains, to societies – that is New and Noteworthy in Psychedelic Science. Join us roughly every other Tuesday at 4pm starting this Tuesday February 16th, where we are delighted to have Dr. Sam Vesuna. Dr. Vesuna performed research as an MD/PhD student in the Deisseroth lab at Stanford studying the neural circuits underlying self-self and self-other interactions. This week, he will be presenting his work on cortical circuits underlying ketamine-induced dissociative states, published in Nature.

Join us on future weeks to hear from Dr. David Olson, Joshua Falcon, and Dr. Ruben Laukkonen! Finally, we would love to thank BGSA for sponsoring this series and MindCORE for hosting us on their CrowdCast server. Register for Sam Vesuna, David Olson, Joshua Falcon, and Ruben Laukkonen at these links!

Immunotherapy Listing – Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Duke University

February 2, 2021 by Rebecca Lopez

Duke University Logo - J. Mack Robinson College of Business

A Postdoctoral Research Fellow position is available in the Applied Therapeutics Center (Department of Surgery) at Duke University, Durham, NC.  This fellow will work with Drs. Zachary Hartman and Erika Crosby to explore the fast-developing and highly interdisciplinary fields of oncology and immunobiology with an emphasis towards immunotherapeutic strategies to treat different types of breast cancer.  This emerging field has recently seen the clinical development and approval of multiple checkpoint inhibitors and industry interest, which should yield experience for the candidate applicable to a career in academic medicine or biomedical pharmaceutical research. We are interested in a fellow to explore combinations of different immunotherapeutic strategies with targeted therapies in a variety of breast cancer models.  As our group is in collaboration with multiple industry and academic partners, we are seeking an applicant with excellent communication skills to serve as a member of an interactive team.

Training/Experience:  Strong English communication and interpersonal skills are required as the candidate will need to be able to work with many collaborators in a multi-disciplinary team environment.  Experience and proficiency with cloning design and execution, in vitro assays, in vivo mouse models, as well as versatile cellular and molecular biology techniques (quantitative RT-PCR, flow cytometry, western blotting, ELISA, immunological techniques, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, recombinant DNA cloning, and luciferase reporter analyses) are preferred.  Additional skills utilizing high-throughput shRNA screening, next-generation sequencing, or modelling in vivo tumor environments are highly valued.  Proven ability to learn and pioneer new techniques and assay systems will be equally valued to past familiarity with any particular techniques.  We are looking for a passionate, hard-working, and self-motivated individual that is able to work on a multidisciplinary project and wishes to pursue a career in translational cancer research.

Education: Candidate must have recently graduated (within three years) with a Ph.D. and/or M.D./Ph.D. degree in Immunology, Cancer Biology, or related field.

Interested candidates should submit a current CV/biosketch with their references and contact info to zachary.hartman@duke.edu.
