We are seeking a highly motivated scientist with established track records in genome editing technologies to join our Functional Genomics Department in Upper Providence. The group will support identification of novel targets, advance technologies in genome editing in addition to stem cell biology, and publish findings in peer reviewed journals. The scientists will have the opportunity to work on targets in multiple therapeutic areas including Oncology and Immunology. This is a laboratory position in which the individual will also be part of an extensive internal and external network to identify new opportunities in the development of disease-relevant models for use in drug discovery and target identification. The selected candidate will be expected to support the development of others and assist in setting strategic objectives in the genome editing and stem cell biology space.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support target identification and drug discovery programs by applying specialist knowledge and expertise in genome editing and stem cell biology in the design and implementation of program team objectives and discovery tactics.
  • Provide scientific and technical guidance in the development of disease relevant models utilizing genome editing strategies in the target identification and drug discovery process, including genomic screening
  • In conjunction with internal and external partners (including biotech and academic labs), evaluate and implement new technologies in stem cells and genome editing.
  • Demonstrate strong scientific leadership as well as excellent written and oral communication.
  • Ensure compliance with all GSK R&D data integrity practices, ethics codes, work practice training and standards.

Why you?

Basic Qualifications:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • A Ph.D in a life sciences discipline with 0 years of experience or a masters degree in a life sciences discipline with 3 years of relevant experience
  • Strong track-record in genome editing technologies, especially CRISPR/Cas9 related.
  • Experience with culture and differentiation of induced pluripotent stem cells

Preferred Qualifications:

If you have the following experience, it would be a plus:

  • Transient techniques in genome editing technology
  • Transcription regulation of genes using CRISPR/Cas9
  • Molecular genomics, molecular design for developing genome editing tools
  • Practical knowledge of cell biology and molecular analysis of cellular function, with familiarity with one or more of the following:
  • Cellular phenotypic assays
  • Predictive disease-relevant cell/tissue culture models such as primary cells, stem cells, co-cultures, and 3-dimensional culture 
  • Induced pluripotent stem cells and differentiation

Outreach Opportunity Summer 2020

The University of Pennsylvania Division of Student Engagement is seeking 100 current Penn graduate and professional students who are interested in serving this summer as graduate assistants (GAs) for the Penn Rising Senior Summer Academy (PennRSSA), an adaptive, pioneering new program serving rising seniors attending public and public charter high schools in the School District of Philadelphia. There is a $2,000 stipend for GAs as well as the training and support needed to mentor local high school students. Please see the attached flyer for more information. Applications are now being accepted.

If becoming a GA isn’t possible for you, we are also looking for medical and graduate students who would like to do one-time presentations and be part of panels focused on medicine and research related careers. Beginner Python Data Science Bootcamp 2020

Come learn Data Science using Python in a fun, beginner-friendly environment!

This Python Data Science Bootcamp is a free workshop designed to help scientists in the biological and biomedical sciences gain basic Python skills required for applications in data science. No prior programming experience is required. Using Python, we will cover the core programming concepts needed to perform basic data analysis, with an emphasis on common problems in biology. By the end, we hope you will feel comfortable using Python to analyze your own data!

The course will begin with an optional semi-supervised completion of a Python course on CodeAcademy designed to get students comfortable with the basics of python at their own pace. Students completing this portion will be assisted via online office hours where they can receive help from GCB students. While completing the CodeAcademy course is strongly encouraged, if you feel confident in your basic Python abilities and are more interested in the applied lectures, this is not strictly required.

The CodeAcademy portion will be followed by 6 weekly lectures by our TAs on using Python to perform common data science tasks. Lectures will be accompanied by programming exercises. There will also be an active online Q&A forum where you can get help throughout the classes. 

Note that if you have to miss a class or are not able to attend at all, lectures will be posted, and you can still participate with the Q&A forum.

NIH Structural Biology and Molecular Biophysics Pre-Doctoral Training Program 2020-2021

The Training Program

The NIH Structural Biology and Molecular Biophysics (SBTG) pre-doctoral training program is soliciting applications for appointments beginning September 1, 2020 and running through August 31, 2021.This training program 

  1. Provides students with exposure to leading developments in the various fields comprising Structural Biology and Molecular Biophysics
  2. Provides the students with ample opportunity to develop presentation skills; develop analytical strategies for evaluation of the literature in this field;
  3. Through presentations by authoritative speakers the program exposes students to traditional and non-traditional career paths in Structural Biology & Molecular Biophysics
  4. Subsidizes travel by students to major meetings of the field.  Mentors will be required to support travel by the trainee to a national meeting relevant to the training program. The training program and the Department of Biochemistry & Biophysics will provide funds to subsidize travel.

Eligibility

The program supports 3rd year Ph.D. students and 4th year for combined degree students for one year. Applications are now being accepted from rising 3rd year Ph.D students or rising 4th year combined degree students only for appointment to the 2020-2021 year of the training program.

Preference will be given to students who attended the 2019-2020 pre-award meetings. Students who have not taken BMB 508 will be required to take this core course concurrently with an appointment to the training program. 

Application Procedure

The following documents should be sent to the SBMB training grant coordinator, Kelli McKenna, via email. Please fill out the cover sheet on the next page and assemble all required documents into a single PDF document:

  1. Cover Sheet (attached here)
  2. CV. This should include undergraduate GPA and any honors, awards, publications etc.
  3. Copy of your UPenn Graduate School transcript. Contact the coordinator of your graduate group to obtain this. 
  4. A document describing the student’s research, how the research is appropriate for this Training Grant, and statement of their commitment to/interest in TG, and commitment to attend/partake in all Training Grant activities.  Two pages maximum.

The applicant should also arrange for the Ph.D. advisor to send 1) A letter of recommendation. 2) their biosketch in NIH format,directly to the SBMB training grant coordinator, Kelli McKenna

Deadline

12 pm, Friday June 19, 2020.

Applications will be evaluated by a small group of trainers and appointments announced in early July. The start date for appointments will be September 1, 2019.
