“Harnessing the Power of LinkedIn in your Job [re]Search”

This information session is part of Career Services’ “Job Search Series,” of workshops for graduate students and postdocs. It will provide an overview of LinkedIn as a research tool for career exploration. Topics of discussion will include:

  • How to do more than just “have” a profile on LinkedIn.
  • How to identify manageable networking goals using LinkedIn.
  • Why research on LinkedIn can help to demonstrate interest in employers and career fields.
  • What you can do to stay informed and keep your profile active.
  • How researching successful professionals in the career fields that interest you can help you to project your own skills and experiences more confidently. (Via Handshake)

BGS Professional Skills Series – “Networking”

IHE: “Uncovering the Secrets of the Cover Letter”

Penn Career Services’ Associate Director, Joseph Barber, provides insights for job seekers looking for positions beyond faculty roles, specifically when writing a cover letter. Since it is less structured than a resume, the cover letter can easily become a source of confusion. In this Inside Higher Ed article, Barber provides a narrative format that can highlight one’s resume in an engaging way.

Interviewing for Faculty Jobs – STEM

This Career Services program is open to doctoral students and postdocs as part of the Academic Job Search Series. The panel presentation will provide insight into navigating a campus visit, a crucial component of the faculty interviewing process. Candidates, whether applying for a visiting assistant professor position or a tenure track faculty position, should be prepared with questions, negotiation points, and an understanding of what the search committee is looking for.

Take this opportunity to learn about campus interviews from faculty members who have been through the process as candidates and members of search committees.
