In a recent blog post published by Penn Career Services, Pharmacology graduate student Katherine Webb shares what she’s learned from coordinating Penn’s PhD Career Exploration Fellowship 2020. According to Katherine, the fellowship provides an opportunity to, “simultaneously support other graduate students’ career exploration as well as improve my own professional skill-set and networking.”

ASCB, “Four Ways to Use Social Media”

The American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB) maintains various Career Topic Blogs, including one about Professional Development. Their latest post covers four ways to use social media to boost attendance at your poster or talk. Much of the advice is applicable for anyone trying to boost their professional presence on social media in general. This is a growing trend, as a growing number of scientists use social media to network and discuss publications.

Institute for Regenerative Medicine – Annual Retreat

Registration is now open for the Institute for Regenerative Medicine’s annual retreat! Attend on January 30, 2020 at the Franklin Institute to hear from researchers across Penn and CHOP working on stem cell science, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine. You will also hear about plans for the IRM’s next 5 years and resources to help support your research and outreach efforts.

Trainees are invited to submit abstracts for a poster session and lightning talks. When registering, indicate your interest and send an abstract to yaroshc@pennmedicine.upenn.edu.

This year, the keynote speaker will be Paul Frenette, MD, Director of the Ruth L. and David S. Gottesman Institute for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Research at Albert Einstein Medical College. Dr. Frenette is an expert on hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) biology and the connections between HSCs and cancer and sickle cell disease.

Reminder: 2020 International Emory Global Health Case Competition

Penn’s Center for Global Health is looking for 5-6 graduate students who will travel to and participate in the 2020 International Emory Global Health Case Competition!

This is a unique opportunity to develop and recommend innovative solutions for a 21st century global health problem in a competitive and collaborative environment. The competition will take place Friday, March 13 – Sunday, March 15, 2020 and it is fully funded – food and housing are provided by Emory, and flights are reimbursed by the Center for Global Health. Winning teams will receive generous prize packages: 1st Place $6000, 2nd Place $3000, 3rd Place $1500, 4th Place $900, Honorable Mention $600, Participants’ Choice Award $600.

If you are interested in applying to be a member of the Penn team, please send your CV & Statement of Interest (500 words max) to Andie Yost at ayost@pennmedicine.upenn.edu by December 13, 2019.
